WILD MOUNTAIN TIME

About four years ago I started painting again after focusing on other media for the past fifteen years. My process is very intuitional. Almost always starting with a mountain-scape, each piece then develops organically, often leading to imagery of humans interacting with animals and nature. Reflecting on my work, elements reveal our need to feel connected to the natural world, even though we continue to dominate and destroy it.

WALK ON THE WILD SIDE

Intimate views experienced during walks through the bush near my home in Warrandyte have formed the basis of these works. When painting I explore the feeling, the magic of being in a place at a point in time. Experimenting with the intersection of observational and experiential: where natural forms morph into abstract strokes of paint. Capturing the energy of early morning sunlight, the angle at which it falls, it’s colour temperature, the juxtaposition of cool deep shadows. Bold brush strokes, contrasting colours and pictorial depth pull you in, creating a feeling of immersion and of being drawn along a path.

RADIANT CONSTELLATIONS

Radiant Constellations is a new body of work by Nellie Sturzaker that expands painting into space. Ceiling-mounted canvases release strands of luminous glass seed beads, as though pigment has radiated beyond the picture plane. Formed through a labour-intensive, meditative process, the work traces cycles of reflection, transformation, and emergence. In Radiant Constellations Sturzaker blurs the line between surface and space, turning decoration into structure and spectacle into encounter.
In contrast, a riot of plush toys, stitched edge-to-edge in vibrant rainbow hues, animate the accompanying wall assemblages. The Wolf overwhelms with its scale, while the mirrors quietly reflect the viewer back. For the artist, these works embody her reflection on memory, time, and the lingering weight of childhood identity….
