Playing Patience presents a collection of paintings that echo the multi-layered experience of control in society and one’s self. Challenged by a passiveness to productivity and systemic expectations, Summers explores the oscillations of existence, from discomfort to beauty. Emotive works portray domestic, urban and figurative imagery with intimate moments of isolation, health and dependency, balanced by joyous connection, celebration and the charm in objects which surround us.
The inherent attachment to desired outcomes epitomises our relationship to control, which is visually challenged by the artist in a practice-based process utilising stronger language of gesture, figurative rawness and abstraction. Refined and explicit communication continue to recede in this body of work, instead trusting time, materials and feeling to communicate introspective concepts from an influenced culture.

LOVE ME, EAT ME, HOLD ME

Love me, eat me, hold me is the first solo exhibition by neurodiverse artist and designer Ella Brissenden. Combining bright, playful graphic novel-style storytelling with wall-mounted ceramic tiles, the exhibited works narrate innately human moments - the first sips of a morning coffee, an answered phone call at 2am, the silent vigil beside a growing vegetable garden. Building a non-linear narrative across the exhibition space, the combined works invite visitors to reflect on their own experiences of being loved, consumed, and held. This exhibition is supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria.
